Husband charged with Gadsden nurse's murder

GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) - Etowah County authorities have charged an Attalla man with killing his wife. The charges come just hours before Carla Smith is laid to rest.

Smith's husband, 53-year-old Tommy Smith is in the Etowah County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

The body of Carla Smith, 42, was discovered Monday in the trunk of her car. On Tuesday, Gadsden Police told FOX6 News an unnamed person of interest had been taken into custody, but as of Thursday afternoon, no charges had been filed in the case.

Family and friends began searching Monday for Smith, 42, when she didn't show up for work at Riverview Regional Medical Center. Police began a search and later found her body in the trunk of her Jaguar parked in a lot on Brooke Avenue.

Smith was a nursing supervisor over the emergency room at Riverview Regional Medical Center. Colleagues said she was considered a rising star by the hospital and the medical community.

"All the people at the hospital were speaking positively about her, never heard any negative comments," said Dr. Bill Hartzog.

News of the murder has been the talk of the town in Gadsden and around her home in nearby Attalla.

"It's a tragedy and it's such a shock it would happen here locally," said Kay Hendrix. "It saddens us someone would be murdered."

"It was awful," said Judith Crane. "I didn't know the lady. It was a horrible thing to find out."

"I couldn't believe it," said Garlon Griffith, a neighbor. "My wife spoke to her Halloween night, then she came up dead. She was the type of person who would do anything for you. She loved kids, she loved her grandkids."

Visitation for Carla Smith will be held Friday at the Morgan Funeral Home in Attalla from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. with a graveside service following immediately afterward.
